What if we all disappeared tomorrow , leaving behind nothing but our stuff ? That ’s what we expect inthis hebdomad ’s Shooting Challenge . The results ? Funny , clever , serene and often eery .
Shooting Challenge : A populace Without masses
WINNER: Busiest Pool In NYC
I wish I had a secret pool this gravid . This prototype is a compounding of 20 or so paradigm direct over an hr menses at the pool in Astoria , New York . It is the largest puddle in New York City . I was shoot a time lapse from when the consortium open until it filled up , and I had a option of 800 frames to stich this together with . This was scud on Saturday , and it was closelipped to 100 degrees outside so the place was packed .
There were a couple hundred multitude in the pool when the lifeguard in the stall started blowing her whistling at someone . The son in the shot was n’t there at the fourth dimension , but I remember it would be funny to aggregate the two . The shot that consist most of this pic was taken before the pool opened , though I still removed several staff and lifeguards from the physical body manually .
I know that it technically is n’t empty , but LET say plague off New York and only the lifeguards and this boy survived thanks to Cl ingestion . The manual removal and accession of cloth ( i.e. that pinkish towel ) was done with the magic wand tool , some clone stamp , blurring and smudging . Nikon D300s , 24 mm focal length , f 3.1 , 1/320 s , ISO 100 .

Who Left the Lights On?
I happened to be in the city and wantedto inject some visible horizon shots at night , but my prior involvement run low late and Ididn’t need to get home at 2 AM if I missed the next power train . That ’s when Iremembered gizmodo ’s shooting challenge for this week and resolve to take ashot at it . I really need to endeavor to get a shot at a busy manhattanintersection , and not have to remove people via photoshop . I decided to practice a foresightful exposure , andafter a few attempts I got this one . The hardest part was the multitude who stoodstill . If they were moving , they would n’t do up in the picture , but I kepthaving that picture where one someone stood still . This is take on at thirty-fourth streetand 7th avenue , right down the block from Penn Station / MSG . ISO – 400 , 11 mm , Nikon d7000 , 5 s , f/22

Crosswalk
I knew I could n’t match a setting as vibrant and crowded as Times Square , so I take my friends for suggestion on localisation and how my “ Boston ” scene could stand out . My brother hail up with this brilliant idea of dispatch all multitude except for something or someone that should never be neglected ( e.g. , a deary , a nestling or a stroller ) .
So … I headed out with my tripod and T2i for the Boston Common / Public Garden , and after a few ( bad ) angles and effort , I decide I ’d attempt to make a shot of a kid crossing the street by himself / herself . This turn out to be quite intriguing because parents these days invariably bind their kid hand when crossing the street ( square ;-) ) . So , a suntan and 200 shot later , I finally got this little rebel crossing the street * not holding hands * in the eye of a big crew . Then get along the late nite Photoshop playfulness : 1 ) Remove parent ( and everyone else ) from the shot , 2 ) supply some machine ( from the late 199 frame ) , and ta - da ! – A cool shot ( and interesting moving-picture show theme ) is born . Canon T2i , 17 mm , f/10 , ISO 100

Burnout
aim around trying to estimate out where we were operate to shoot something using a long photo later on these metropolis streets . I pip the brakes and jump out of the railcar . The sweltering 108 degree heat hit me instantly and I realise why this entire city block seemed deserted . I took a couple shots and its all I needed . Black and blank transition and done . Empty never seemed so easy . give thanks you heat wafture ! Nikon D90 , Tokina 11 - 16 millimeter
F - point 4.5 , Expo . 1/2000 , ISO 200

Too Hot to Play
We spend the day wander around town in lookup of something cool to pledge in the 105 level heat . I came upon this playground in the mid afternoon . Since there were no kids around and it had this … would have been full on any other twenty-four hours feel to it I grabbed the sticks and took a few shots . This one just stuck with me at how bright the colors on the slide add up out , barely any redaction except for color correction . On days like this what do you need Photoshop for ?

The EMPTY Biggest Little City in the World
This was my perfect opportunity to attempt capturing “ EMPTY ” in a engaged seat w / out the use of an ND filter . After a successful solemnization at the Men ’s Club for my son ’s bachelor political party … walked out of there only to find the sun had just issue forth out . Perfect timing because the horde of people that surround this area were thin to none ! Through clever positioning … I face to you “ The EMPTY Biggest Little City in the World ” .

Dawn of the Dead
I decided that a busy mall would be a good scene for this week ’s contest . This was a horrifying choice because in increase to the hundreds of people walking around , there were an equal amount of rumination and shadows to conduct with . Not to mention , there ’s always at least one person sleeping on a terrace in the mall . What ’s up with that , right ? Anyways , I set up my tripod on the third flooring and was able to get a dyad dozen slam over a period of time of about 20 minute before security amount and kicked me out . That was another challenge , the Christ Within changed greatly over the 20 minute time couple . I spend a few hours put together together 7 unlike prototype to remove the citizenry and then added that post - Revelation of Saint John the Divine Hollywood colouration to give it an surplus good sense of devastation . The shots were fascinate at ISO 200 | f7.1 | 1/50 shutter | 18 - 55 mm Nikkor @ 18 mm , on my Nikon 5100 .

Free Flowing Tube
I had intend to put some fourth dimension into this challenge on Sunday as Saturday required a race visit back to my parents . Turns out the Sunday session was n’t needed as on arriving for the first tube on Saturday daybreak I found the place near deserted . Nikon D3100 with Tamron SP AF 28 - 75 mm F/2.8 , 1/8 sec , f/5.6 , ISO 200/ Color tweak and Noise subdue in Photoshop

No Tripod Zone
I was traveling through the DC Metro , and think this platform at Gallery Place look like a good spot . I wrapped the gorilla fuel pod around the rubber rail overlooking both red line running . I in reality got yelled at for lead this photo . After taking about 40 shots , a police force ship’s officer come near and ( was in reality very polite ) informed me that I am allowed to take picture within the Metro organisation , but I may not use a tripod , or clamp equipment to their safeguard rails . He waited for me to come away the gorillapod and I move on .
One friend charge out that I could have study a similar picture at 1 am ( d’oh ) , but this was taken at noontide on Friday . I can provide one of the frames that is full of people . In fact I caught something interesting , on the upper odd side , in a few of the untouched photo , there is a couple seated on the floor , the male is comfort the female person and they are peach to a police officer . Not quite certain this situation beyond that .
I am using a Canon 40D. I crank the ISO up to 1000 , aperture f/2.8 , shutter 1/20 ( to make it well lighted ) I ’m using the 15 mm Fisheye . I also used a remote so I could just click over and over . I was there about 5 minute before having to move along .

After the Volcano
This was shoot with a Canon 60D , using a tripod the timekeeper . It was shot in Gloucester MA just after the Volcano erupted . The last of us had just fled to the boat and were doing some serious rowing …
The Image was shot at f:5 , @ hundred-and-sixtieth of a sec . The Focal Length was 70 mm and the ISO was 100 .
The impression was transmit via a secrete prototype Wi - Fi gadget , too my other 60D which I was enshroud under the gravy boat seat … If your thinking of chatter Gloucester any prison term soon , do n’t forget to get one of those Silver Spacesuit things you see the scientists wearing on the Discovery Channel … make your gon na demand it .

send off help .

No Line at Cloud Gate
Currently shoot the breeze Chicago , staying near Millennium Park , and wanted to enamour the extraordinary “ Cloud Gate ” — affectionately and appropriately known to topical anaesthetic as “ The Bean ” — with as few people in the shooter as potential . leave behind the hotel just after sunrise and legged it over to the green . Found the carving bathe in the affectionate dawn visible radiation with nary a soul in survey , proving early razz do get the louse . Used a Canon EOS 60D with EF - S 17 - 55 millimeter f/2.8 IS in Av mode at 1/1000 sec , f/2.8 , ISO 100 .

Empty LA
For this challenge I decided to go to business district Los Angeles and attempt to make it look deserted . I used a 10 discontinue neutral density filter to obscure out the motorcar to the stop of ( almost ) invisibility . I had tried this jibe before but this was my first time using morning ignitor and I wish the result much well . Canon 7D , Canon EF 17 - 40 mm f/4L , USM @ 17 mm , 30 seconds @ f/22 , ISO 100 . colour counterbalance and one small sign removal in Aperture and Photoshop .
– Eric Norris
So granted , some of you bound off out on the expert challenge of this one , opting to observe an empty area rather than stack several picture to mimic one . And in reality , I think it shows . Our winner has a certain impossibility to it that natural shots want — a tacit “ what is going on here ? ” that rises in the pit of your stomach . ( If you have n’t , seek to gauge the combined shots vs the natural shots and score yourself . ) That said , great work all around . And a especial thanks to those of you who spent … I do n’t even want to suppose how long on this body of work . Big shot onflickr .
