Not the veridical Bermuda Triangle — the fictional one where Cthulhu , Amelia Earhart , and Aqua - Sasquatch chill out drinking Bay air . This is in reality a photo of the Navy ’s eerie mothballed fleet in Suisun Bay , 30 miles northward of San Francisco .
lensman Scott Haefner and his fellow worker evaded military patrol vessels to photograph these swim behemoths , which are now being scrap because they ’re shedding toxic rouge into the alcove . go over out Scott ’s tale of infiltrate these ships and some amazing maritime photography .
These spook ships , part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet ( NDRF ) overseen by the U.S. Maritime Administration ( MARAD ) , were supposed to be ready for responsibility in the consequence of a national emergency . Perhaps a few ship are really “ reserve quick ” and could be spark , but the vast absolute majority are well beyond their useful lives and rot off as they await in line of work for garbage disposal .

The mothballed ship once number close to 400 , and in 1959 , 324 vessels still run along the waters of Suisun Bay . Although the ships continued to dwindle down over time , roughly 75 remained throughout the 2000s , rusting and leach toxic heavy metallic element into the bay as the Bush administration did little to address the fall apart ship [ … ]
Getting inside the ships was usually not straightforward , and sometimes impossible . MARAD locks them down tight , but there are so many potential entry that persistence often pay off off . One of the first orders of business each slip was finding a topographic point to sleep . The ships are often stinky from stamp , mildew , PCBs , and decay , so a room with window that opened was preferred . We typically slept in the captain ’s room where we found comfortable couch , translatable beds , lots of distance , and muckle of light during the day .
you may interpret about the lensman ’ agonising run - ins with Navy patrol boats ( and see more awesome pic ) atScott ’s website .
