Ryan Wolfe is mourning the death of her partner, former NHL player Adam Johnson.

“My sweet angel,” Wolfewrote in a post to her Instagram StoriesMonday. “I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”

Johnson, 29, who played for the Nottingham Panthers and previously for the Pittsburgh Penguins, died in a “freak accident” during a game in England against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.

Emergency responders treated Johnson on the ice before transporting him to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital while about 8,000 fans in attendance were asked to leave the arena due to a “major medical emergency,” per ESPN.Police in England are now investigating his death, the outlet reported.

“Honestly, I’m at a loss for words,”  former teammate and fellow Minnesotan Jake Guentzel told the outlet.

He added, “All I do know is I’m happy I will always be able to call Adam a teammate.”

The Penguinsalso paid tributeto their former player, writing that Johnson would “always be part of the Penguins family.”

“It was our honor to watch him fulfill his dream of playing in the National Hockey League,” the team shared.

Johnson, a University of Minnesota Duluth alum. played for the Penguins during both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, appearing in 13 games during his NHL career. The hockey player also spent time in the American Hockey League, as well as overseas in Sweden, Germany and most recently in the Elite Ice Hockey League.

Additionally,The Athleticreported thatJohnson and Wolfe got engagedover the summer, but PEOPLE was unable to verify.
