At Computex in Tapei last month , Intel showed off Honeycomb Glacier , a Modern prototype of a wild laptop with one standard 4 honey oil showing , and one half - size 4 1000 show right below it . Earlier this workweek , the company let me match it out at E3 , and while it calculate goofy , it does submit some smart ideas .

Joakim Algstam is one of the people who came up with the image . He ’s director and section manager of Intel ’s Enthusiast Laptop and Innovation Team . His squad created the laptop to give OEMs an idea for how to better build up for the dual screen initiatives press by Intel and Microsoft , but also because , harmonise to him , more screens think of more taxing loads on the mainframe which means a better chance to show off Intel ’s processing prowess .

So to be clean-cut , this neat little guy is perfectly a marketing ploy by a big company that has seenits chief rival do things like create a 16 - core CPU that only require 105W of power . But all-fired , if I did n’t cut into the foetid little turn up laptop .

At its most basic , it ’s a dual screen laptop computer likeAsus ’ unexampled ZenBook Pro DuoandHP ’s Omen X 2s . spread out the laptop computer , and bask a 4 super C display in the normal stance , and a lowly auxiliary display placed above the keyboard . In a twist , though , there ’s a 2d flexible joint on the Intel twist that let you uprise the display up so that both are directly in your assembly line of sight .

Intel added a Tobii eye tracker in the hinge between the two displays so that you could activate it by looking at a windowpane . Algstam showed it off by blue-pencil text in Note on one sieve , then glancing at a Slack window in the other concealment and type without ever reaching for the trackpad . He place Slack , a music player , and another internet browser on the smaller window and glanced down any time he necessitate to interact with any of them .

He also showed some second - screen gaming diligence , which looked a lot like what Asus and HP have record off with their duple display devices . But it ’s the combination of Tobii and the flexible joint that really make the Intel prototype put up apart .

How you know this is not a device intended for the real world. Intel put in a sensor to test your vitals…because why not.Photo: Alex Cranz (Gizmodo)

I continue reckon of my current laptop , a MacBook Pro with a lamentably underutilized Touch Bar . I never apply the damn thing . I had to take Siri off of it because I kept circumstantially activating it when I ’d overleap the Delete cay . ( I put back it with a Do Not Disturb push , so now when I mistype , I just do n’t get Slack presentment from my boss for a while . ) I care that I can shuttle through a PowerPoint presentation cursorily or scrub through an audio file in QuickTime , but that ’s fundamentally all it ’s good for . The Touch Bar is so bantam that it ’s gruelling to squeeze utility out of it .

The Honeycomb Glacier ’s burly second display is another story . Because it can be a Touch Bar when call for , providing a series of contextual touch push , but it ’s big enough to care right applications .

Too defective it still feel like a tease . HP and Asus are dipping their toes into the field , and Microsoft has repeatedly been bruit to have its own three-fold display equipment in the works . Other laptop Creator likeDell have insisted dual presentation devices have a long way to go . But that ’s image for you : More future than now .

Correction 6/12/19 1:56pm EST : Intel has since told me the name of the paradigm is Honeycomb Glacier , not Twin Rivers . The text has been updated to reflect that .
