I do n’t wish Batman . Like an old distich of tennis shoe or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies , Batman is something I grew out of . It ’s voiceless to relate to a racy white swell who works out his pathos by investing in the militarisation of vigilantes and police instead funnel cash into the crumbling infrastructure that raise his rogue gallery . And then I play Batman : Arkham VR .
That ’s the new PS4 - single practical realness biz from Rocksteady , which you might remember as the company that ended the brutal run of rotten superhero games with Batman : Arkham Asylum and Arkham City . You also might remember Rocksteady as the fellowship that ran piteous Bruce and company into the ground with the fun to play but narratively terrible Batman : Arkham Knight .
Arkham VR almost completely draw up for that misstep . It ’s only an hour long , and in truth it ’s more a demonstration of what VR can do than any kind of real game , but in that hour my pulse raced , my breathing time hitch , and I had abbreviated moments of empathizing with a superhero I usually line as “ gripe ass . ”
It ’s big moment is one of Batman ’s most clichéd : The last of his parents at the hands of Joe Chill . We ’ve seen that double murder so many times it ’s less a childhood calamity Bruce Wayne needs to get the blaze over , and more of a joke .
But Batman : Arkham VR arrange you in diminutive Brucie ’s shoes . He ’s not an adult with shitty coping mechanisms , he ’s a small kid obscure behind his female parent ’s skirt as a villain lurks in the swarthiness . And when his parents fall and it ’s just you staring down the shining drum of Joe Chill ’s gun tunnel vision sets in . The gun is small and scant animal foot forth , but it feels large and ominous . Not unlike staring down the barrel of a real gun ( please never do that ) .
The first time I play it the view instantly had me sweating and panting like I ’d just hold the dog out for a jog . I whipped off the headset and had to pace the room and will the shaking in my hands to stop . It was all a secret plan — not actual in the least . Yet somehow Rocksteady and hale me into a kid ’s place as he witnessed a double murder and suddenly that murder did n’t palpate as funny any longer .
The headset you fall apart when using PlayStation VR is a lot grownup than other VR headset and there ’s a thick bed of charge card that lightly campaign to your cheeks and forehead , but over the minute of Arkham VR thing get claustrophobic — the walls subtly , slowly , close in . Then the innocuous headset you ’re wearing starts to feel tight and confining like Batman ’s cowl might . mirror dot the plot and constantly prompt you of precisely who you are wreak — which only adds to the bizarre sensation of being a hulk dude in leotards and a kevlar mask .
The game wisely reinforce that notion of powerlessness first deliver at the hands of Joe Chill , and prison term and again you ’ll get hold yourself playing the world ’s heavy tec as hoi polloi he loves are savagely polish off in front of him . You ca n’t do anything to stop it , and that initial surge of fear resurfaces over and over again .
Until you ’re snare in a diminutive cell and the awfulness of Batman ’s world closes in .
Batman still might not be my favorite sub , but after an hour in his shoes I have a helluva good deal more regard forcomics ’ lousiest lay .
