Life on WASP-33b would basically be the pits — the titanic exoplanet ’s atmosphere ranges in temperature from a searing 6,000 to a relatively soft 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit . But hey , at least you would n’t have to bestow sunblock .
That ’s because WASP-33b contain a familiar atmospheric bed called a stratosphere . And just as Earth ’s stratosphere includes a thin sheet of ozone that shields biography from damaging ultraviolet radiation irradiation , recent observations using the Hubble Space Telescope show that WASP-33b ’s stratosphere probably stop titanium dioxide , an even more powerful eccentric ofsunblock .
Earth ’s ambience is much more than a bubble of air . It ’s comprised of distinct level that differ in some of their most basic physical place . For example , the troposphere that we live and breath in cool with increasing EL . But high up in the superimposed stratosphere , we see the opposite blueprint . At 33 thousand feet , ozone absorbs ultraviolet light Inner Light and re - radiates its vigor into blank , cause the temperature to rise with increasing altitude . This so - called ‘ temperature sexual inversion ’ is also witness in the stratospheres of Jupiter and Saturn , which trade ozone for energy - take in hydrocarbon .

But on blaze hot exoplanets like WASP-33b , neither ozone nor hydrocarbons could endure , leading scientists to wonder whether stratospheres would exist at all . Now , we have our first data-based evidence that they can .
In a new study , which come out Friday in the Astrophysical Journal , astronomer took a fresh feel at WASP-33b ’s atmosphere using Hubble ’s panoptic playing field 3 camera , which snaps a spectrum of most - infrared radiation . From a NIR spectrum , astronomer can pick out the telltale signatures of different petrol and set their temperature . In the case of WASP-33b ’s furnace of an air , scientists used this data to identify a temperature inversion consociate with water and titanium dioxide . atomic number 22 dioxide , an active ingredient in sunblock , happen to be one of the few UV - shielding compounds that get by to hold itself together at thousands of degree Fahrenheit .
“ These two lines of evidence together make a very convincing case that we have detected a stratosphere on an exoplanet , ” said lede written report author Korey Haynes , in astatement .

The discovery is significant for two reason .
