Most times when we see the incarnation of death in fabrication , it ’s presented as a stale or inexorable theatrical role . Not so for Anubis on the television show adaptation of American Gods . Here , the Egyptian deity of the hereafter is stoical but unexpectedly strong ; he has a line to do , one that fill most people with apprehension , but he does n’t seem like that bad a guy . And that ’s for the most part due to the performance of actor Chris Obi .
The actor , who discipline at the Drama Centre London , might be a recognizable face for those who ’ve discover Snow White and the Huntsman or the 2016 Roots miniseries . His work on American Gods has had him portraying Anubis / Mr. Jacquel as peculiarly relatable ; there ’s a hint of everyman dedication and priestly occupational group to Obi ’s execution . He feels like a guy who convey up everyday and does his job the best he can , because he knows that it alter people ’s ( after)lives .
When I utter to Obi after the destruction of American Gods ’ first time of year , the British thespian talk eloquently about how he find his agency into the caput of death itself .

Death Becomes Him
Obi ’s friendly relationship with Daredevil lead to his first encounter with Neil Gaiman ’s work .
Chris Obi : Well , my friend is Charlie Cox and he did Stardust . He ’s one of my best pals . So I was kind of familiar with Neil Gaiman , but I was n’t familiar with his whole shebang . Really just Stardust . But I ’d just done beginning and really experience into the habit of reading the source material and rootage bluster me out . It had this profound effect on me . And now it would have been a must for me to translate American Gods before I take on it .
The rum thing is that when I get audition , I just do it this character reference . I knew how I would interpret it . Sometimes , that is not your place , because directors desire to experience like they can move you around . But I just had a horse sense of it . The idea that death to humans is almost the terminal frontier … I felt that there ’s no point in being all kind of scary about it . If anything , it run me to be the opposition . And I have sex the scene [ with Mrs. Fedil ] . I commend reading it and go , “ Oh , that ’s quite emotional ” , because he is move , but he will do his job . But whilst doing his job , there is a connection . And he takes his task — not even that he take it seriously , there ’s just a connection to what he does and how he see their fear . But he also understands they postulate something whole to take them through . That was the initial link for me .

And then what happen for me was my brother Mitch — my best acquaintance , really — had a CVA which almost killed him . I was just thrown into the realness of what happened and the moment . My back had spasmed , as a upshot to what happened to him , so I was in a lot of forcible and aroused pain in the neck . If I tried to have made Anubis showy or to adjudicate and act him , it would n’t have been possible .
I was forced to find a place of reality for [ Anubis ] . I was n’t trying to act him . I was trying to factor out in what befall when somebody almost dies . You know what I imply ? This was my brother , there were times when I got this idea he might not exist . You almost become quite stoic about it . You ca n’t become too emotional . At the same time , you ’ve bewilder all these actor who are working around the [ other parts of the ] plot , so you have to be aware and almost you have to become the calm one .
“Don’t Try and Out-Act Those People”
American Gods is a show carry with stellar performances . Obi knew early on he ’d have to focalise on his own functioning in a very specific way .
Obi : So it was very fortunate for me to be in the present caller of , like , Ian McShane and Orlando Jones and Gillian Anderson . [ My mentation was ] do n’t try and out - act those people . Not that it ’s a competition . These guys go out and hit their marks . Whatever I did , I was n’t going to act . I was conk out to make [ Mr. Jacquel ] what was occur deep down , in sprightliness , but it would be on the show . It loosen me . Then when somebody like Laura — who has that thing that just mystify to him — says , “ listen ” , that takes him to another , unlike place .
There Will Be Darkness
Some of Obi ’s secure scenes on American Gods were encounter against Emily Browning . When viewers first meet Jacquel , he ’s very stoic , unagitated , and comforting . But when he encounters Laura Moon , somebody who flouts the rules of his universe , he gets a piddling pissed off . I asked Obi how he modulated his performance .
Obi : The style I interpret the playscript was , I come to people who trust . I would n’t [ normally ] be trade with something like [ Laura ] . “ She ’s a non - worshiper , ” I conceive . So , I think , originally , [ executive producer ] Bryan [ Fuller ] was like “ There is something about her that he bang . ” She does n’t believe herself , but there ’s still something about her that he knows . That ’s the mode in . Do you know what I mean ? And then the fact is that he ’s not used to being challenged . He ’s very efficient at his job . He ’s superb at his business , and when he sees this girl and she ’s saying , “ No , I do n’t want to do that , ” that ’s where he motivate from his normal calm . She ’s an anomaly .
It ’s so beautiful working with someone like Emily , because — I ca n’t talk for her — but she almost does the same matter , where she does n’t “ playact ” . She just regain the character inside her . So I remember we had a lot of minute where we were like , “ Nope , you would n’t do that — no , I would n’t do that ! ” And I mat up like I was speaking the same speech communication when I was make with Emily . And Craig [ Zobel ] , the director , he got a lot of frolic to it .

My back was beginning to get a niggling number better and all of the sudden , I was palpate , “ Oh , I need to find something more than just what happens when he is confront by an unusual person . ” And he is determine — the way I see it — to put her where she belongs . Because , otherwise , it ’s as bad as not being believed in . I do n’t have intercourse what the second time of year is going to bind , but , it ’d be dainty to follow that line . How determined is he to rule why she ’s an unusual person .
The Voice From The Other Side
The first thing that move me after getting on the earphone with Obi was that he does n’t sound like Mr. Jacquel at all . So I had to need him where the deep bass voice of the character ’s voice came from .
Obi : I predict , it ’s so constitutive . I think it ’s what we do . I think that ’s the joy of playacting , that something happens . And that ’s the stunner of American Gods , for me . It ’s that something unquestionably happened whilst discuss it with Bryan . Something just … I know who this character was . It ’s so funny , I think even in my audition , my voice just went lower . And now I ’m a minute excited , talking to you , and I ’m an musical octave gamey . But when we started , it just bellow . It feels a trivial campy , as well . The play of him . It just suit .
Right now , I ’m speaking and take the air around my kitchen but I have to find a stillness for Anubis , which is not me . And that was a process . I ’ve done quite a number of theatre of operations and tons of creative hooey ; this is the most creative work I ’ve done . And it seems to be the least showy body of work I ’ve ever done . It just provide the actor to line up more .

“It’s Mind-Blowing”
worker do n’t always know what the last reading of a undertaking will appear like , when it ’s all said and done . When it ’s something as out there as American Gods , Obi says take care the whole season toy out is a material misstep .
Obi : It ’s mind - blowing . It really is nous - blowing . When I was in LA , I had Starz so I could watch it on the Sunday , and now I ’m back London so I ’ve got a day holdup . And I ’m like , “ Oh , I desire to see what pass ! ” Especially of my own body of work , I ’m very critical . Like , I was really critical of when my episode was coming . When the Vikings bring down , it was full of action . I saw them deplume up that scene . Then I check my first Anubis picture being full of lifelessness and sing , and I think the line really worked .
But I like the musical theme that we — Michael , Bryan and all of us working on the show — have kind of adopt the author material and say , “ Okay , what else can we take out ? ” The themes all get sort of step up by the political climate . When I watch it , I ’m just really like … I ’m so blessed to be part of this . I can tell my child , “ appear , pop was once part of this show . ”

There ’s a pop music element to it , which I guess also is all-important . I often believe that art should be seen by the peck , you know , like Shakespeare . He desire to touch everyone . And I believe that ’s what American Gods is trying to do . It ’s just a delight . It ’s a real blessing to be involved .
Ibis & Jacquel
The scenes that Jacquel has portion out with mortuary partner / chronicler Ibis — played by Demore Barnes — have been remarkable for the greenback of affectionateness and lovingness . I expect Obi if he feel like they were a couple , long - time line of work cooperator , or something in - between .
Obi : It might just be [ a rapport ] with Demore , who I just get on with . They ’re almost opposite . Ibis is very excitable . And Jacquel is just very sonorous … stable . But in that , they find an understanding where there ’s a picayune kind of subject matter . It ’s “ No one else believe in us ; I trust in you . ” It ’s fond . It reminds me of Plato ’s Symposium , where there are debates about what love is and what is the most purest , perfect love .
[ With Ibis and Jacquel , ] I think it ’s just everything love can be , which is nice . That break us way to interpret it however you require . And I think we see more of their relationship in time of year two . You ca n’t be scared for allowing yourself to witness new thing — because that ’s substantial problems for your fictitious character . So , it ’s something to look at . And that ’s what I like about this labor that we ’re doing . I find , as an actor , it reserve me to acquire — I am develop , as an actor should .

The final Conversations With God will be with Yetide Badaki , the cleaning woman who work love goddess Bilquis . For the former installments in this series , clickhereandhere .
