With a title like permit ’s Scare Jessica to last , you ’d forgiven for assuming this dispirited - budgetcult moviearrived as part of the post - Friday the 13thwave of 1980s slashers , especially considering itslakeside context . But it came out in 1971 — and 50 years by and by it ’s still unsettling in mode few other film can claim .
That ’s mostly due to the master theatrical role , play by Zohra Lampert . The performance is full of unexpected alternative — like being ecstatically excited at odd times — that serve set the tone for the movie , which direct to confuse the spectator as to what ’s really pass off and what ’s occur alone inside Jessica ’s intellect .

But 1971 was pre - Halloween , pre - opprobrious Christmas , even pre - Last theater on the Left ; while there ’s some Rosemary ’s Baby ( 1968 ) , The Haunting ( 1963 ) , andCarnival of Souls(1962 ) in its DNA , it also takes stirring from classic gothic tale Carmilla and Henry James’oft - adapted1898 novelette The Turn of the Screw .
