Last calendar week , Doctor Whomarked a major milestone — the twentieth anniversary ofthe spreading of “ Rose ” , the watershed episode that brought the show back to telecasting after almost 20 age in hiatus , kicking off a whole new geological era . But it did so in a relatively quiet manner compared toWho‘s common recentgrand anniversary overtures . But it turns out there ’s a reason for that — and that soon enough , it ’ll be rectified .
talk to io9 over Zoom beforehand of theseries ’ latest returnin a few week , showrunnerRussell T Daviesexclusively confirmed there are plans for an time of day - farseeing installment ofDoctor Who Unleashed , the series’behind - the - scenes fellow show , that will explore and keep the making ofDoctor Who‘s revival earned run average . It will transmit in the amount month on the BBC iPlayer in the UK , and worldwide onDoctor Who‘s YouTube channel .
The reason it did n’t make it timed to the anniversary of “ Rose ” ? Well , in part , Davies himself .

“ To be honest , [ the day of remembrance was n’t on my mind ] . I ’m very much cognizant how on Disney+ worldwide , going to some territories that have never hadDoctor Whobefore , ” Davy told io9 as he reflected on the late time of year of the show airing so close to the twentieth day of remembrance of “ Rose ” . “ There are some people watching this to who Ncuti istheDoctor — the number one , their Doctor , and so you ’ve got to bear that in mind . That ’s always been the case , for many years , to look for that new audience . So I actually thought it ’d be a bit backward , be a bit hard handed to [ acknowledge ] … and now we ’re here and I ’m kind of somewhat kicking myself , because everyone seems to be full of joy about it ! ”
Seeing that pleasure in the build up to the anniversary ultimately spurred Humphrey Davy into realizing the series should also keep in some way too , and chose to do so with the new documentary film . “ It ’s coming out late , becauseIwas the one say ‘ let ’s not do anything ! ’ , ” Davies laughed . “ And then quite tardily in the twenty-four hours I changed my judgement ! ‘ Everyone ’s mouth about it , let ’s do something ! ’ . So we are . ”
