In the blooming lamia film Daybreakers , Ethan Hawketakes on the classic , but often dull , character : the self - hat vampire . Hawke explains how to keep the suffering undead interesting — and how a writing style pic is like a toughie careen Sung .
While doing Daybreakers roundtable interview , we got Ethan to open up on the base of this dark - tone film — be warned , there ’s some minor plunderer below .
When you took on this purpose you were also take on the iconic self - loathing lamia character , how did you prepare yourself for this , and did you observe any other self - execrate vampires , such as Brad Pitt in Interview With A lamia , or [ Adrian Pasdar in ] Near Dark ?

I watch both of those moving picture . You know , it ’s funny you say that because it ’s a very hard role to do right . As soon as you start run a self - loathing undead … The fun of being undead is that you get to do whatever the hell you want so you get to be liberated from anxiety and all this stuff and nonsense , it ’s eldritch . I felt like a mint of times [ for ] the histrion who have done it — myself include in this — it ’s a battle to not be boring . All the other lineament in the movie are more interesting than you , because there is nothing worse than watching an self-examining , alienated , undead somebody . So I struggled with that . You just have to kind of embrace it .
The fun thing for me [ spoiler ] is that he became alive . I do it the notion that when face with immortality , you get depressed . And when given back mortality rate , the fact that you ’re get going to exit , your living is filled with promise . There ’s something real to that . It gets to the core as to why our lives are wonderful : [ the fact ] that they ’re not going to last incessantly .
Do you think that the the great unwashed who see this film cogitate about these things , or just the blood and the gore ?

No . Not at all , I know that . That ’s not lose on me . The point of a honorable musical style pic is kind of like the compass point of a punk rocker sway song . Which is that the message of it derive at you in the subconscious . You do n’t think about it , it just kind of work on on you in a weird path .
The managing director talked about vampire becoming such a large thing , and they wrote the movie before Twilight and dependable Blood come out . What do you recall about this whole phenomenon ?
I have no idea , more than anyone else , why these zeitgeist things happen . Why the nooky ? I have no musical theme . You know there has n’t been a vampire moving picture in a while , all of a sudden multitude bulge realise that , and blab out to themselves . In a little while they ’re going to be ready for space movies again . For a while all it was , was Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica , and crap like that . Then that ’s out of fashion . Now that , the … what ’s it phone big blue devil ? Avatar , it ’s going to be aliens again , because we can do aliens really well . And so it will be alien for a while and that will be fun , and then the Western will make a come back . And before you know it the Gladiator picture show will be back . It ’s just an endless wheel of what we get world-weary of . I cogitate the fun thing about Daybreakers is , it ’s the first horror lamia movie in a while .
