We ’ve praised The Vampire Diaries as one of the most winsomely write , character - focused show on television . Which mean , in turn , that we were going to wind up holding it to a slenderly higher standard than just “ shamefaced delight about naked hotties and softheaded shit going down . ” So it ’s perhaps not surprising that we ’ve been just a smidgin disappointed with the show of late .
Here are all the things we ’d care to see The Vampire Diaries put a wager in , permanently . Spoilers ahead …
Stefan wants to kill Klaus . Okay . Seriously . Stefan ’s motivating for desire revenge on Klaus were a bite hazy in the first billet , but by now this plot line has gone on endlessly . Klaus preserve Damon ’s life , and in proceeds Stefan agreed to be Klaus ’ sidekick for a while — and this conduct to Stefan becoming Rupert Giles . Oh waitress , I mean it direct to Stefan becoming the Ripper , who is not Rupert Giles ’ remorseless alter - ego . Stefan cheat up Damon ’s plan to wipe out Klaus , and take in his freedom — and then he straight off slip the coffin arrest Klaus ’ house , which led to a struggle of humour between Stefan and Klaus . I wo n’t say a battle of humor , because we ’re babble out about Stefan here . The wit was entirely one - sided .

Anyway , since that coffin - surety office ended , Stefan ( and Damon ) have been trying to kill Klaus for 100 years . And by now , it ’s turn into a morsel of a farce . Klaus knows they want to kill him , but he wo n’t toss off Stefan because he still hopes Stefan will be his bestie again . This plot line has been putting the “ stale ” in “ stalemate . ” It ’s clock time to move on .
Alaric is a hidden serial killer . Unlike the Klaus - Stefan storyline , this one has never even had any potential . Seriously . I like the idea of exploring Alaric ’s dark side . I like the notion that Alaric , who maintain referring to himself as a adjourn vampire hunter , feel unfit about the fact that he ’s basically Damon ’s squawk now .
But there are two problems with the “ serial slayer ” storyline :

1 ) Alaric did n’t get to decide to originate taking matter into his own hands , which would have been an interesting character electric arc . or else , he just got controlled / possessed by a wizard tintinnabulation that already turned Elena ’s antecedent into a serial Orcinus orca . control Alaric actually make a alternative would have been way more interesting .
2 ) He ’s not drink down vampires . He feels bad about quitting as a lamia hunter ? Great . Have him devise sneaky and devious way to ambuscade and kill a few vampires . aside from anything else , the vampire / human ratio among the show ’s cast is getting way too lamia - heavy recently . And a sight of the vampire have hit humans quite recently , and do in fact deserve to pass .
Mostly , though , consecutive killer Alaric has been boring in a way that I never thought a storyline involving Alaric could be . Last night ’s sequence , in which he beg Stefan to render and kill him , was just … I ’m actually lost for word . Alaric decide his disconsolate side wo n’t manifest unless he ’s in risk of being killed by Stefan — but Alaric experience Stefan believably wo n’t go through with it , so his dreary side does too .

Elena forget that Damon tried to shoot down her comrade .
Damon did n’t know that Jeremy was wearing his sorcerous anchor ring when he broke Jeremy ’s cervix last yr . He ’s admitted as much . He mean to kill Jeremy , and if Damon had had his way of life , Jeremy would be dead . ( You ’d think Jeremy would bring that up , when they go to Denver to get Jeremy and then start realize out in front of him . ) Where I number from , kill someone ’s beloved pal sort of takes you off the table as a love stake , and yet Elena has apparently settle to traverse this under the carpet . rather , Elena mouth in a farinaceous - mouthed way about how Damon always has to wreck everything , and Damon say he ca n’t be a good guy because then the great unwashed will expect too much from him . The clotheshorse is a serial slayer who killed your sidekick .
The lack of a real villain

I have sex that soap operas do n’t need villains , as long as there ’s Lot of churn storylines about who ’s into whom — and I really love the impending Tyler / Klaus / Caroline trigon . But when you think about this most recent half - time of year of TVD compare with where we were in premature age , something becomes kind of obvious . There ’s no real villain drive the storyline — nobody who wants to do something that our hero are driven to prevent . There ’s no Klaus endeavor to do his unhinged intercrossed ritual , or Katherine trying to reach the tomb or whatever . ( Or whatever Damon was hear to do in season one , it ’s a long time ago . )
TVD has a long and proud custom of bend its villains into sympathetic eccentric — Damon was the scoundrel in time of year one , then Katherine , then Klaus . None of those three is really a “ scoundrel ” in any meaningful sense now .
So the show want a strong resister , especially if there ’s any Bob Hope of the season ending with a bash . And last Nox ’s installment bequeath me with a dreadful , drop feeling that it ’s … Mama Original . Sigh .
