George Mueller , the NASA executive who helped steer the bureau during the sixties and was known as the ‘ father of the space shuttle ’ , died sooner this calendar week at the years of 97 .
Mueller joined NASA in 1963 as the Associate Administrator of the NASA Office of Manned Space Flight , where he oversaw the planning and examination of the of the hardware and spaceflights that eventually saw the first lunar landing .
Appointed by NASA head James E. Webb , Mueller insisted on a major reorganization of the bureau as a condition of his hiring , and formed the Office of Manned Spaceflight in 1963 . Entering the position , he found that the way had small in the way of pass over the costs of the program . With Apollo behind agenda and becoming increasingly expensive , he was implemental in helping to direct and coordinate the project , while helping to streamline monetary value . Some of his elbow grease let in the ‘ all up ’ insurance of testing entire rocket at once , which put him in conflict with some of the agency ’s leading scientist , such as Werner von Braun .

When Mueller stepped down from his role in 1969 , he aid to institute NASA ’s future by advocating for follow on projects such Skylab and a reusable ballistic capsule which would later on be known as the Space Shuttle .
Speaking toNASA in an oral history , Mueller noted that it was establishing what came after Apollo that he was the most lofty of :
Getting to the Moon on time . What else ? [ Laughter ] No , actually , plausibly even a greater thing was putting in property a follow - on program that would begin to exploit what we ’d achieve in Apollo . The real problem with Apollo was that it was a one - time event , basically , and it was n’t built to hold on a lunar exploration computer program , for instance . But we did put in place the program that exploited what was left of the Apollo matter , Skylab and those platform , and then laid the groundwork for what were the first two steps in our prospicient - image programme , which we ’re now implementing . I retrieve we misplace a imagination , and Dan [ Daniel S. ] Goldin is commence to bestow the visual modality back , which is heavy .

It ’s an obscure role , but while engineers , pilots and scientists get most of the attention for getting to the moon , the organisational and administrative base that had been show was as critical to the success of the man spaceflight programme , and Mueller was critical to the organizational model of the trunk that experience us to the moon .
Without him , Neil Armstrong would have never tread on the lunation .
