A new projection is creating digital reproductions of the instruments used in key alchemy experiment , in hope of fostering perceptiveness for the craft affect in a new generation of science acolytes .
The photograph above is part of theBeautiful Chemistryoutreach project , a collaborationism between the University of Science and Technology of China ( USTC ) and Tsinghua University Press . It is inspired in part by the nineteenth one C German biologistErnst Haeckel , whose most famous book , Art Forms in Nature , boast stunning illustrations of nautical and microscopic life forms .
When the site first launched in 2014 , it showcased a serial publication ofeye - popping animated videos of chemical response , minus such distracting ingredient as beaker and test vacuum tube . Now it ’s back with a new design and a photographic gallery — plus short telecasting teaser , with more to come — of 15 CG reproductions of the apparatus used in some of the most important chemistry breakthroughs from 1660 to 1860 .

“ In these 200 years , chemical science transformed from practical art and inscrutable alchemy to a physical scientific discipline with great precision , ” project leader Yan Liang told Gizmodo via e-mail . “ We hope citizenry could look at this time period of account from a new slant : the evolution of chemical instrumental role . ” He partner with CG artist from IHDT.tv to create the reproductions . “ We worked very intemperately to make certain that the instruments we recreated are scientifically precise , ” he said , while still give the artists sufficient creative freedom .
Liang holds a PhD in material science from the University of Minnesota , but he also has a long - standing interest in graphics and lifelike design . After a Erolia minutilla with Boston - based Digizyme create science animations — including a digital schoolbook for the iPad ( E.O. Wilson ’s Life on Earth ) — he ’s now working on visual image in the USTC ’s communications section .
“ The beauty of science is [ often ] immerse inside scientific publishing that are never show by the general world , ” Liang pronounce . “ I think my science background and self - instruct computing gadget graphics skills allow me to find interesting topic and bring them to a wide hearing in visual forms they are familiar with . ”
