TheA Star Is Bornactress and singer took home the award for best pop solo performance for her song “Joanne” at the pre-show ceremony before the 2019Grammy Awardson Sunday night.
Gaga bested an impressive slew of fellow nominees: Beck (“Colors”),Camila Cabello(“Havana (Live)”),Ariana Grande(“God Is a Woman”) andPost Malone(“Better Now”).

Gaga, 32, was nominated for a total of five awards at Sunday’s ceremony. In addition to best pop solo performance, the singer earned nods in record of the year, song of the year, best pop duo/group performance, and best song written for visual media — all for her work on“Shallow”fromA Star Is Born.

She came away a winner in the best song written for visual media category — a huge boost for “Shallow” ahead of the 2019 Oscars in two weeks, where it is nominated for Best Original Song. The duet withBradley Cooperhas already earned wins this year for best original song at theGolden Globesand best song at theCritics Choice Awards.

Gaga, a six-time Grammy winner, wrote “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)” in honor of her late aunt, who inspired the self-titled album from 2016. The singer opened up about the experience of working on her album ahead of last year’sGrammy awards, whereJoannewas nominated for best pop vocal album.
“I have carried adeep griefin my heart over my family’s tragedy,” she wrote on social media, referring to her late aunt, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, whodied of lupus complications at age 19.
“The loss of Joanne affected my father so deeply that it affected me. When he cried, I cried. When he was angry, I was angry. When he was hurt, I hurt,” she continued. “Today I transform this grief to hope and healing. After 10 years with you I still get nervous before the Grammys, but I know I have an angel with me.”

Though the pop star was born nearly 12 years after Joanne’s death, she remainsone of Gaga’s biggest influences.
“When Mark [Ronson] and I wrote it, the decision to name the album thatwas in tribute to my father’s sisterwho died when she was 19,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe of her poet/painter aunt in September 2016, one month before her album’s release.
She went on to reveal that the album encompassed “everything about Joanne, which also happens to be my middle name.”
“It’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are,” Gaga added. “She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.”
