Boabs were a major author of food for thought and shelter for the Indigenous multitude of the Tanami Desert , who engraved their barque with symbolisation resemble the renowned rock art to the west . Despite the importance of these carvings to the polish , the trees are little - studied and endanger byclimate changeand old age .

Professor Sue O’Connorof the Australian National University is leading a hunting expedition to change that . In research published in the diary Antiquity , O’Connor and co - writer identify the circumscribed account of research on the boabs and collaborate with the Indigenous multitude of the desert to explore the import of the art in their bark .

In the course of a sight last year O’Connor , Garstone , and Rivers were able-bodied to settle 12 engraved trees and consider them in point .

One of the trees , the heavy , is 12.25 metre ( 40 feet ) around its base , but the geezerhood of Australian boabs , in general , are strange , get alone these specific trees . “ They are often say to endure for up to 2,000 age but this is based on the ages prevail from some of the monumental baobab tree in South Africa which are a different coinage , ” O’Connor say in a statement .

“ We just do n’t eff how old the Australian boabs are . It is vital we obtain some unmediated ages for these remarkable Australian tree diagram , which assist secernate the story of First Nations Australians and are the source of a plentiful cultural inheritance . ”

The age of the etching is even more mysterious , but they could go out back centuries in the light of report of Indigenous masses restore and repainting them over generation .

The trees are mostly so distant from modern action that they are not threaten by logging or mining . However , something – perchance climate change – is having a devastating effect onbaobabs in Africa , where they are most abundant , so there are grave veneration for their Australian counterpart and the artistic production carved on them .

The trees place may be just a selection of what is out there . O’Connor noted hundreds of boabs are visible on Google Earth in areas the squad never reached .
