Titan is the only other home in the Solar System with river , lakes , and seas . But they are unlike anything on Earth . They are not made of piss , but of swimming hydrocarbon , mostly methane . On the surface of those seas , reflection from domain spotted smart floater lasting between a few hours and several workweek . These are the " magic islands " , and researchers might have finally understood what they are .
The first suggestions after they werediscoveredin 2014 were waves , bubbles of N gas , or solid state , either suspend or float on the surface . The first is not really a feature of speech on Titan . wave are at most a few millimeters tall , piddle these body of liquid peculiarly smooth .
The novel oeuvre focused on the fundamental interaction between the formation of solidness in the atmosphere and what happens when they terminate up in the lakes . “ For us to see the wizardly islands , they ca n’t just drift for a second and then settle , ” Yu said . “ They have to float for some meter , but not for forever , either . ”
So the model looks at holey solids like pumice stone , full of holes or tubes where methane can slowly seep in , which would allow for these solids to swim over the swimming features of Titan . The wizard islands would not merely form in the middle of thelakesbut by the shores , where they could get to a significant size before calving and float away .
“ By looking at how long the stuff will be adrift for each scenario , our bailiwick suggests that the magic islands might be made of heavy glob of porous constituent solid state , ” the team save in the report .
And that is not all . The presence of a frozen hearty covering on the surface of the lakes and rivers would help explain their fluency , solving a second mystery for the price of one .
